Essential Oils to Keep Your Home Fresh & Clean

Updated: Jun 11, 2020

When I clean my home, I don't settle for the average household cleaner. Many have toxic chemicals and take a toll on the environment. I'm here to tell you that there are better options. You could be utilizing your arsenal of essential oils to deodorize and clean your home. Here are some of my personal favorite essential oils to keep your home fresh and clean.

Essential Oils for Cleaning

A number of oils can be used to deodorize, disinfect, and refresh your home.  A good rule of thumb when creating your own DIY cleaners is to use 3-10 drops of essential oil per 16 ounces of liquid. I usually dilute with water and/or white vinegar.

Tea Tree Oil

Another household cleaner that I love to use is a basic tea tree oil cleaning spray, perfect for countertops! Mix a few drops of tea tree oil and 1/2 teaspoon baking soda into a half vinegar/half water solution. Yet another fresh scent that leaves you feeling CLEAN!

Orange Oil

When it comes to greasy dishes, let orange oil do the dirty work. Orange works as a great degreaser and will also take off any sticky residue left behind on counters or cupboards.

Lavender Oil

If you're new to essential oils, start with lavender! With its calming aroma, it is perfect for anything around the house. When I mop the floors, I love to mix a few drops of lavender into a mixture of vinegar and water.

Happy Immunity

Take care of germs around the house by wiping down common surfaces with Happy Immunity. It contains a powerful blend of essential oils, each with properties that have been known to combat illness and keep germs from spreading. You can find it here

Essential Oils for Air Freshening

Create your own air freshener by adding a few drops of your favorite scented essential oil to a spray bottle of water. Diffusers are another fantastic way to freshen up a living area. Add a few drops of calming lavender oil to remove stale air and leave you feeling calm and collected.

Household Odors

Apply a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a cotton ball and place them in closets, drawers, or virtually anywhere that needs freshening. Sticky shoes? Mix peppermint (6 drops), tea tree (4 drops), eucalyptus (2 drops) with equal parts unscented witch hazel and water to knock that smell right out! My personal favorite trick is to add lavender and any citrus to my laundry in lieu of any additional fragrant (and chemical ridden) products.

Bathroom Odor

Let's talk about tackling those pesky odors in the bathroom. Try this simple trick: add a few drops of lavender, eucalyptus or lemongrass essential oil to the inside of a toilet paper roll for an instant bathroom freshener. Alternatively, add a few drops of your preferred oil to the bottom of trash cans.

Essential oils are my favorite way to keep my home feeling and smelling fresh. Let us know on social media if these tips and tricks worked for you!
