Helpful Guide to Better Understand CBD Oil

Updated: Jun 14, 2020

Over the last few years, the market has seen a large shift towards all things hemp, and for good reason.  There are many great uses for the hemp plant, but it can sometimes be confusing to distinguish between terminology used in the industry.

Hemp plant

The Hemp Plant

Hemp, while in the same family, is not synonymous with marijuana. Hemp is defined as having no more than 0.3% of THC when measured dried. This amount is negligible when considering the psychedelic properties or “high” associated with THC laden cannabis. Industrial hemp has many uses, including paper, textiles, biodegradable plastics, health food, and fuel. It is also one of the oldest plants that have been domesticated by humans.

Three common derivatives of the hemp plant are CBD oils, hemp seed oils, and hemp essential oils. There are differences in how and where they are extracted from the plant, but each have their own useful properties. Each are utilized in The Original Oil Shop products, but keep reading to learn more about the benefits of CBD oil.

CBD Oil

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a cannabinoid that is derived from the hemp plant. There are more than 80 different kinds of cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBG, THCa, etc) that work together using the Entourage Effect. Each cannabinoid has its own properties, but when combined together, the effects are greater than the individual. THC does not play a part in industrial hemp, but this is where the benefits of CBD shine.

CBD, as well as the other cannabinoids, interacts with the endocannabinoid system in our bodies; CB1 and CB2 receptors are located all over the human body in almost every organ, but are concentrated in the central nervous system and brain. The jobs of these receptors are to help regulate homeostasis by reducing stress, boosting immune response, neuroprotection, and affecting sleep, appetite, mood, and pain.

The human body also creates its own endocannabinoids. CBD does not directly interact with CB1 and CB2, but it stimulates activity in the receptors without needing to bind to it. These receptors are found all over the body so there are systemic benefits to introducing CBD to your system.

Topical Benefits of CBD Oil

The benefits of CBD are extensive and have found to help a large spectrum of common problems in some people such as inflammation, chronic pain, insomnia, seizures, multiple sclerosis, spasms, and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. The three most common useful properties of topical application are:

  • Analgesic (Pain Relief)

  • Anti-Inflammation

  • Soothing inflammatory skin conditions

  • Psoriasis

  • Dermatitis

  • Eczema

Used topically, it is most beneficial to apply the product directly to the location it is most needed. Keep in mind that it should not be used on open wounds. It is also important to recognize that dosage is determined on an individual basis, experiment with small amounts of oil first and increase the amount if you are finding that it is not enough. Effects can be immediate or they can take up to 48 hours to show relief. It is recommended to apply small amounts throughout the day to build up an appropriate level that will leave you feeling some relief.

Oil Extraction

CBD is extracted using many different techniques, some cleaner than others. Avoid products that utilize butane and hexane, which are neurotoxic and may leave small amounts of residue in the product. Instead, lean more towards cleaner extraction methods like CO2, high-grade grain alcohols, or oils like olive oil.
